Healthcare in Denmark is universal. Visits to the doctor's office, emergency wards, and public hospitals are free to everyone covered by the Danish health insurance system.

Dental care, chiropractic treatments, and medical prescriptions are subsidized, while children under 18 are entitled to free visits to the dentist.

Specialist consultations may also be partially or fully covered depending on the circumstances and provided that you receive a referral from your doctor. You can contact specialized medics within the fields of ears, nose, throat, and eyes directly and without referral from your own GP/general practitioner. 

Health insurance card

Your health insurance card, also referred to as the 'yellow card', is proof that you are covered by the Danish healthcare system. It allows you to receive healthcare treatment in Denmark, Greenland, and the Faroe Islands, and is used in a number of different situations such as when you visit the doctor. Medical prescriptions and dental treatment, however, are not covered by the health insurance card.

Once you have informed the municipal authorities of your arrival and have received a CPR number, you are included in the general Danish health insurance scheme. You choose your doctor when you register for your CPR number at the International Citizen Service or Borgerservice. 

Your health insurance card will be sent to you by post. Please make sure to have your name on your mailbox.

Your CPR number, name, and address are printed on the card, as well as the name and address of your doctor. You have to present your health insurance card whenever you attend an appointment at the doctor's office or the hospital. It is recommended that you keep your health insurance card on you at all times, as it serves as a primary form of ID.

Dental Care 

Dental care is free for children under the age of 18 who are registered as residents in Denmark. Adults over the age of 18 have to pay for dental care. In the case of adults, care and treatment are state subsidized.

Children are automatically appointed to one of the seven dental clinics, based on the school district that the family lives in.

When calling for emergency assistance, it is important that you speak slowly and clearly. You will be asked for your name, location, and phone number. Help will be sent immediately.

• Call 70110707 for out-of-hours medical service in Southern Denmark (medical service when your own GP/general practitioner is closed - from 16.00-08.00 and in weekends and holidays).
• Call 99440809 for emergency dental treatment in Southern Denmark (dental assistance outside your own dentist's opening hours.
